NGC 253 is another name for the **Sculptor Galaxy** or the **Silver Coin Galaxy**¹²³. It is a **spiral galaxy** with a Seyfert nucleus in the constellation Sculptor¹². It was discovered by **Caroline Herschel** in 1783 while she was searching for comets¹².

NGC 253 is one of the brightest and dustiest spiral galaxies visible, and can be seen with binoculars¹³. It has an apparent magnitude of **8.0** and lies at a distance of about **11.4 million light years** from Earth¹. It has a diameter of about 70,000 light years and contains about 200 billion stars³.

NGC 253 is a **starburst galaxy**, which means that it is undergoing a period of intense star formation, especially in its central region¹. This is caused by gravitational interactions with other nearby galaxies, such as those in the Sculptor Group, which is one of the closest groups of galaxies to the Milky Way¹³. NGC 253 also has a powerful jet of gas and radiation coming from its active galactic nucleus, which makes it a Seyfert galaxy¹.
